Meet Doug. Doug’s a good guy. He loves Pokemon, cats, soccer, and playing with his older brother. Doug rarely asks me to buy him toys, which is why I was pretty surprised in June when he said “Daddy I want a remote control car”
I said, “Doug….I bought you one for the holidays and you never play with it.” Doug paused for a second and said “I would like one that goes really fast, and that I can put bigger wheels on.” It was a very respectful way of letting me know the $15.00 RC Car I bought him at Walgreens was not going to cut it.
Fast forward a couple hours later and we are at Hobby Town in Northbrook, IL. I went in planning to spend no more than $100.00, and I walked out with a $140.00 RC Car, and a 6-year-old with a smile you could see through his mask.
We arrived home and ripped open the box to what looked like a mini monster truck. We quickly inserted the batteries in the car, and Doug pulled the transmitter trigger sending this mini truck 20 MPH off the curb and flying down the street. There’s my boy popping wheelies, and drifting full speed into our driveway.
As Doug played with his car, I vaguely recalled being his age and having a friend whose Dad had a Hobby Grade RC Car. We were only allowed to watch my friend’s father play with it but not drive it ourselves. I mean after all these cars are hundreds of dollars and parts easily break when you crash them. It was as that thought when I hear Doug say “Ummmmm Daddy, I think the wheel fell off my truck.”
The next day we are back at Hobby Town to “replace the cracked caster block on Doug’s Remote Control Car” … I figured while we’re here lets test out another couple of vehicles to see which one we like more. Spoiler alert, they cost more than the $140.00 truck.)
When we arrived home we got the new RC Cars ready to go. I fixed up Doug’s car and with the assistance of my older son, we started zooming three RC Cars down our block. The next thing you know the neighbors and their kids come over to try, then a few more kids come over from down the street. All the kids from the neighborhood are communicating, playing, racing the RC cars against each other. One kid on a bike even raced a car to see if he was faster. The RC Car left him in its dust. They spent the next 30 minutes trying to make the cars jump the curb and do full body rolls. They were doing this all while social distancing during these times. Even the parents were watching in amazement, probably recalling their own Remote Control Car Memories from their youth.
Over the next 2 months, our team of creative performing and visual artists stayed working through the COVID 19 pandemic to create a brand new immersive experience. August 21st, 2020 Mobile Racing Challenge came to life for its first event. A new addition to the Mobile Escape Room and Mobile Axe Throwing line of attractions that come directly to your location. Our 30 x 20 ft track gives adults and kids the opportunity to step into the driver’s seat of a high-speed race car….just much smaller. My hope is to create that adventure for our clients just as it did for Doug, his friends, and the neighbors.
